After the Comforter Dies

Like most people, we use and abuse the comforters in our home.  Between forts, bed jumping, and two cats (with claws) who love to "fluff" the bed- our comforters have a short life span.  So what do you do with the left over pillow shams?  Occasionally they will coordinate with a new bed spread, or could mix in with another room.  But what if they just don't match?

You could always cut the fabric up and use it for another project.  But let's be honest- I'm terrible at sewing.  So after the most recent death of our comforter- I had two pretty king size pillow shams with no home.

So I decided to try to remake them into something new, without destroying them for future use.

I took a throw pillow from off the bed to use as a template, and slid it inside the king pillow sham.  I then began folding the fabric into itself.

After folding up the fabric, I tucked it around the pillow creating a folded crease that looked similar to a seam.

This would be the bottom side of the throw pillow, so it shouldn't easily come unfolded.  I could also use some safety pins to hold the fabric closed.  But the fold seemed secure enough to me.

Now I'm headed off to Amazon to buy two pillow inserts, so that my shams can become matching throw pillows.
