So my little man has always loved his books, but just recently he discovered that he can keep them in his crib to look at whenever he chooses. This has resulted in nights of sleeping on top of books, bent spines, and tons of folded pages. After using my entire stash of super glue and transparent tape to fix some of these issues, I decided we needed a better solution.
I spent hours browsing mommy websites, looking for different ideas- all with high dollar price tags. Now for anyone with a rambunctious little boy (whose favorite game is Godzilla style destruction), an expensive solution is almost never the best one. So, I decided to break out my trusty 20 year old sewing machine and find a free solution- the "Book" Bag.
After digging thru my sewing supplies I found a swatch of this lightweight dark brown fabric, some grey ribbon from old gift wrap and a spool of a light blue/grey thread. Now, let me warn you, I am terrible with the sewing machine. I don't have the patience to make slow, perfect, straight stitches. I love projects, but want instant results. So I folded the fabric swatch creating a crease at the bottom. No seams at the bottom would hopefully allowing for multiple heavy board books to hang easily. I then stitched the top two seams, so there were no frayed edges. Folding the fabric inside out, I then stitched both sides- creating a bag without straps. Totally simple!
Next I cut my length of ribbon into fourths, and stitched one end of each piece of ribbon on the inside corners of the bag. And its done! I simply tied it around the crib, creating bows that could easily be removed. I was worried that Little Man would be able to untie the bag and didn't want to create any suffocating or choking hazards, The fabric is 100% breathable, and if held up to the light, you can actually see thru it. The ribbons can come untied easily, and are too short to go around his neck.
So after spending about 30 mins cutting, sewing, and admiring- my project was done. And it was 100% free. After 48 hours, its still in tact. So at that price, this project can't be beat.
I'll make sure my next project has lots more detailed photographs! Have fun projecting...
All the best-
KL
